On This Summer Night
Standing on the house terrace
On this summer night
On this summer night
I thought, looking at this night
What a night, what a night
What a breeze, what a breeze
While my hair wafting through
While watching the Moon
While through those coconut trees
While leaves are swinging to the slow wind
While the graceful Moon’s
Light flowing all around
Falling on me and all around
My eyes, looking at this night
Thought what a paintful night
What a paintful night this is
My eyes sketched through every corner
On this beautiful summer night
I closed my eyes
In that darkness, I saw
Me running cheerfully, laughing
On the terrace
In distance, I heard a voice
Calling my name and saying
Please, don’t run, don’t run
You know, I cannot run with you
Hearing that I ran even faster
Laughing out mischievously
And, ran even faster, faster
While my friendly pet dog
Following me, looking at me with awe
While I looked at the dog in awe too
I heard, the beautiful voice again
Saying, come here dear
See, look at the Moon
What a Moon, What a Moon
Look at the stars, Look at the stars
Dear, these are the last two boluses of rice
You have to eat them fast
As the voice was saying
I ran laughing, no, no, no more
The voice again said
Now, open your mouth
I promise, just the last two boluses of rice
You know you are a beautiful doll
I said, aha…aha…Nah…I don’t
I don’t want to eat anymore
With head oscillating in half circle
With tight pouted lips
This time the voice with a little stern, said
Now, if you don’t open your mouth
I will leave you on the terrace, all alone
With a little more stern voice
Said, come here, as I said
These are the last two boluses of rice left
You have to finish eating
Them fast, it is getting late
This time, scared, I obeyed
Ate the rest of the boluses of rice
And, pleaded, please don’t leave me here
The voice said sweetly with all the love
In this world, now, you are my darling
My sweetest granddaughter in this world
And, she said, why would I will leave you
All alone here in this dark?
Now, come let us go downstairs
I followed, holding on to her sari’s kongu (pallu) edges
Followed by my loving pet
Standing there on that terrace
I thought to myself
Now, she is the heroine of my life
My Grandmother has all together
In total 13 Grandchildren
And, she took care of each one of us
With same love, affection and patience
For some reason, though I feel
I was her beloved granddaughter
Maybe I might be dreaming
Maybe I am imagining
But she used to say that
I am her sweetest granddaughter
Every day, on that terrace ritual
Of feeding me food
Whenever she used to say that
I used to feel something inside, special
My tender heart felt so happy
Standing there, I thought to myself
So many memories
So many memories
On this terrace
I opened my eyes
I looked at the dark blue sky
There was a bright star twinkling
I thought to myself
My grandmother is really
Star among all the stars that are shining
I thought, looking at this night
What a night, what a night
What a breeze, what a breeze
While my hair wafting through
I felt a little sad, nostalgic, happy
That my grandmother is watching
From above, with all her love
Blessing me with all her smile
On this summer night
On this summer night
