Hunger Blues: The Akshaya Patra

Some facts about hunger and nutrition

My Personal Interest

If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.

— Mother Teresa

The State of Food Insecurity and Nutrition in the World 2020 — released by the Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and the World Health Organization — reports that the number of people affected by hunger in the world continues to increase. (Worldvision)

Some of the excerpts by David Beasley (The United Nations World Food Programme Executive Director) remarks at the Food Systems Summit in New York, 23 Sept 2021

In world of wealth 9 million people die every year from hunger

This year we’ve had 4.7 million people die from COVID.  At the same time, we had 16 million people die from hunger.

Now is the time to roll up our sleeves because, you know, children can’t eat empty promises. It’s up to us to deliver and make food security and nutrition a reality. – David Beasley

Some facts about hunger and nutrition:

Every night globally around 8.9% (690 million) of the world population go to bed with an empty stomach.

Though the extreme poverty rates have fell from 36% (1990) to 9.2% (2017).

Decades of progress is impeded by Covid-19 pandemic threating to reverse the fight against poverty and   hunger.

According to World Bank evaluation further 115 to 150 million people will fall into extreme poverty by 2021.

If this continues at this rate it will exceed 840 million by 2030

In India though the economy has been steadily increasing about 14% (189.2 million) of the population still remain undernourished.

My Personal Interest

Here is my personal interest I endorse and have been a patron from years contributing in a small way.

Charity Name: Akshaya Patra  (This is not an affiliate link. That means I do not get any commission)

Motto: Unlimited Food for Education.

Mission: To Feed 5 Million Children by 2025.

I personally endorse Akshaya Patra because it provides unlimited food for education for children.

Akshaya Patra foundation is a non-profit organization in India.

That strives to eliminate hunger by providing Mid-Day meal (nutritious and hygienic lunch) program for socio-economically challenging school children. (Partly aided by Government – for Government aided schools).

It feeds 1,800,907 children every day across India. Eliminating class room hunger and at the same time providing education.

Here you can watch the video how the mid-day meal is prepared  at Akshaya Patra mega kitchens for hundreds of school children and transported to various schools.

Controversies apart the purpose of this mid-day meal serves many benefits.

That the poor parents started to send their children willingly (gladly) to school

The poor children (students) eagerly come and attend the school

So that the school children will get nutritious food, good health, education and empowerment

So that nationwide the literary rate would be compounded for future generations

Ultimately the county would be empowered.

Remember this, just providing one meal per day can make a lot of difference in one child and ultimately the future of the nation.

What I (we) provide might be less. This line from Mother Teresa sums it all. If you cannot feed hundreds you can just feed one.

Since, I strongly believe that for every individual soul, food is the primary nourishment.  Empty stomachs cannot stomach the knowledge.

If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one   –Mother Teresa

Development programs like AkshayaPatra unlimited food for education could aid a child health and better education that might lead into a stable income in future.

This can provide a much better secure life, health and education to their future families.

A better health and a better education now mean a healthier and wealthier nations (world) for future generation to come.
